          An update possibly a Z9???

Spy photographers have snapped photos of a new BMW roadster in testing on public roads in Munich. After some debate, the general consensus in the spy community now is that this vehicle is the forthcoming Z9 — a successor to the BMW Z8 and a competitor to the Mercedes SL-Class.

Originally thought to be the next-generation Z4, closer inspection suggests that this could be BMW's SL-fighter. This prototype is clearly larger than today's Z4, but that also supports earlier reports that the next-gen Z4 would be growing up a bit to make room for an entry-level Z2 roadster.

The most noteworthy details on this prototype are the side windows–a glass-to-glass like that of the Mercedes SL. Is that enough of a clue to prove this is the Z9? Quite possibly, especially when taking into account the slim, sleek convertible roof that appears to be a fake canvas top glued to a retractable hard roof that's hidden beneath. Consider that the Z9 is aimed squarely at the tin-topped SL, and is reportedly similarly equipped, and the clues further point to this as the Z9.

Please don't say it is so! The Z4 currently is beautiful and a very inspired car imo. I have no idea what that thing in the pics is...It doesn't resemble the Z4's lines at all, random holes in the fenders...The rear fenders look stupid...

I don't think the Z4 could be due for a facelift anytime soon anyways...they just released the ///M versions?

              Re: BMW Z9 Spy Shots

While previous spy shots of a new BMW roadster prototype didn't give us a good idea of its size, a new round of photos seem to confirm the vehicle is indeed BMW's new Z9 — a competitor to the Mercedes SL-Class. Despite its disguise, one can recognize the rather long hood suggesting a front engine and rear drive. It's also clear this is no BMW Z4.

A spiritual successor to the BMW Z8, the new Z9 roadster will probably be priced above the 6-Series. Once the new sports car hits the market, it will meet a large number of serious competitors. Among them the just launched Audi R8, a possible Mercedes AMG gullwing, the new Lexus LF-A, and Acura NSX.

The prototype's canvas top is fake, hiding a a retractable metal roof beneath. A variety of six- and eight-cylinder models could be offered, with a range-topping Z9 M receiving either a 500 horsepower V10, or 600 horsepower V12.
