  • Looking for an mk4/5 TDI Jetta

So I finally got a new job (Yay!) but it's way down in Leduc, so i'm gonna get a little commuter car which will pay for itself over driving my allroad every day.

Does anyone know anything about either of these cars? They seem to be about the most promising tdi's out there right now in Calgary. Problem is i'm in Edmonton.

    2004 w/ 211k and leather for $5700 in Calgary
    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/c...ationFlag=true

    2003 w/ 185k and leather for $5000 in Calgary
    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/c...ationFlag=true

    vs.

a 2004 in Edmonton with 271k, no leather, but winters and summers for $4100.

Anyone have anything else for sale? Looking to buy in the next week for sure.

99.5-2003 have the ALH TDI engine. Known to be the most bullet proof tdi engine and provide some of the best fuel mileage. The auto transmissions were an issue for those years though so if you need an auto I would suggest either making sure it's been rebuilt or buy a later year. If your driving stick then your fine. 2004-2006 was decent, just poor engineering as far as the cam shaft goes. Basically the same car though. Either way, buy an EGR delete kit and buy a zero start coolant heater. Well worth the investment. You will never have to clean your intake again and the coolant heater will never leave you stranded assuming you plug it in.

Sorry witchcraftz, nice looking car but I don't want an auto.

And 'm pretty well versed on ALH's and PD's (I'm swapping an '06 BRM into my westy right now), but it's incredibly low mileage and we're putting in a performance camshaft, so I've never looked too hard into the whole camshaft problem. That being said, I'm trying to find how long the BEW's can last with not much luck so far. Anyone care to chime in on here? Are they going to be as good as ALH's? And does anyone know how common the camshaft problem really is?

I have a BEW with qutie a few mods, I'm at 270k kms with ZERO camshaft issues...proper oil changes every 16k kms...mostly highway kms. When looking for a used BEW, maintenance and oil change records are a must....wrong oil shortens the camshaft life substantially.

The BEW will last just as long as the ALH, as long as you use the correct 505.01 oil from VW. The camshaft problem stems from a higher amount of pressure. The VW oil was engineered to alleviate the problem. not all BEW engines have the camshaft wear problem.

            Some reading material:

As for it being Auto, the transmission is holding up great with no problems despite a tune. Would be a good candidate for a manual swap.

My BEW didn't need a camshaft until 305k, and that's how I bought it, requiring the repair. It's auto, and it still shifts fine.

Re: Looking for an mk4/5 TDI Jetta

I would never do a 16k interval. The oil also doesn't need to be Vw approved, just use good oil. I would use Rotella T6 5w-40 and you'll never have a problem. BEW is a good engine, you'll likely never have to change the cam as long as oil changes have been done with good oil and filter. BRM has a lot more issues with cams, egr coolers, and cracked blocks. I would never recommend an 06 tdi to anyone.

Curious why? If you use good oil and good filters, you should be good to go with spec. change intervals. (unless your driving conditions are not "typical", which I know is the case with some modded cars on here)

Is it just a level of comfort thing, or have you seen negative results from following VW spec? I know several guys that still do the 5-8000km changes on their TDI's because that's just what they are used to from their previous vehicles, it seems like a waste of good oil. At the end of the day, the only reason they were doing 5-8k changes old cars was because a manual said so in the first place. New manual says 16, and that seems to freak a lot of guys out.

"Minor Maintenance" interval for all new Porsches is 32,000km or 2 years (ref).

There is this 2003 as well posted on Kiiji. Price point is a bit higher at $6900 but only has 141k miles. 5 speed to boot. Supposedly the 2003 with ALH and 5 speed offers the best mileage from my reading but I am no TDI expert!

On a modified diesel especially, I wouldn't do 16k. Lots of extra contaminants are getting in the oil. Another reason is the amount of dirt on the roads in Alberta. Dirty oil = less lubrication. I'll personally will keep doing 5-8k oil changes (depending on driving conditions) in my diesel. Personal preference I suppose.

You guys are talking Miles not Km. All TDIs have a 10,000 mile oil change interval after break-in.

ALH ENGINES are the best diesel engine of the last 4 gens IMO, and if the mod bug does get you, pretty cheap and easy to get more TQ/HP...with moddfing, fuel economy goes up substantially as well.

Oddly, the current TDI doesn't have a break-in change interval anymore. Used to be that the first two were 8000km and 16,000km after that. Now, the first one is 16,000km. (At least in my Mom's 2015 Passat TDI).

For Geobmx4life's comment, my ALH was pretty bombproof and easy to maintain. I loved it. It did die prematurely, but I sort of suspected from day one that it was not looked after by the original owner (it was a CPO car).
