  • Wanted: Dead (or alive) Hella Ballast

I need a ballast for my Passat W8. The stock replacements are $400+. So I want to see if I can use a more common one instead. The problem is that the ballasts have an angled connector instead of straight (see pic). So I want to see if I can fit a straight connector in there, as they are much more common.

So, does anyone have a dead Hella ballast that I can play around with? Alternatively, does anyone have a spare with the angled connector that still works?

    Thanks,
    Eddy

Never seen a cable like that before, I think your best best for this is ebay UK.

On a side note, make sure those things have been sitting for a few days without power before messing with the cables, the condensers can hold a few thousand volts for a while.

Good to know about the cables - thanks.

I'm hoping that someone has a dead one sitting around with the normal straight cable. I'm not thinking about switching connectors (yet) - first I just want to see if a normal straight connector will fit into the headlight housing.

I bought those ends off ebay that connect to a regular ballast and they were cheap, still working though after a couple years. Might be worth a shot?

Tell me more. Can the ends (the red/black connectors) be easily disassembled and swapped without damaging anything? I haven't been able to find anything online about this kind of thing, but I figured that people have done it...

AMP to D2S cable are pretty cheap.

Not easily, tried that and they are a big pain, everything inside is epoxied.
