If you are gonna go older get a b6. B6s look so much nicer IMO. But yeah it kinda sucks about the auto-only transmission option on b8s. My dad has a b8 wagon and it's so nice. Real quick too. 8 speed with 211hp makes for a nimble ride. Good luck with whatever you decide! There is a nice b6 avant for like $10k in dolphin grey on kijiji that I've had my eye on for a while, too expensive for me but man it would be a sweet car to own.
No S-Line goodness, I would keep looking if it was me. Anyone with an Avant that doesn't have the S-Line package always drools over the front bumper, door blades etc. Interior is much nicer too.

Agree. I have a non S-Line A4 sedan, would have preferred and S-Line with all the nicer extras.
Woohoo, wondered if you would see this post. Looking nice and clean, did you get that cloudy chrome trim thing sorted?
Cloudy chrome trim gets temporarily fixed with......WD-40 believe it or not. It clouds back up again, but lasts a good month or so and only takes a couple of minutes. Hadn't thought about clay bar, might be worth shot.

My Passat has the same issue. Haven't found a permanent solution yet.

I actually test drove that car when I was looking for an A4. It is in decent shape but has very few options (if any?). The lack of xenon headlights was a deal breaker for me. It also had a musty smell, maybe owned by a smoker previously?
I looked high and low for a 6sp B7 A4 Avant for two months solid and ended up getting a sedan. The Avants I found were in rough shape, had large hits, or had high kms. The trunk is surprisingly roomy in the sedan. haha
Best of luck in the search... I really wanted either an A4 SLine or S4 avant in manual.. but as you know its now always that easy.
When I was looking last year there was a manual B7 S4 Avant for $25 firm or a B7 S4 Avant Auto listed for 5k less....both had similar mileage and options. It was a tough decision, but couldnt justify an extra 5k+ for a tranny.
While auto isnt great, its actually not as bad as I thought I would be. The majority of my driving is in traffic and its not like its a speed monster, so its been a good fit for me. Throw on exhaust, suspension and wheels and I have a nice little car!
Something to keep in mind anyways....
Id sell my wagon if I could find a reasonably priced B8 wagon to replace it with.
