How did I start a argument? I just corrected him he said a “sat dish is a receiver” I just said no a sat dish is not a receiver; it’s the actual dish you have outside on the top of your roof. Also yes believe it or not there is a “pan” that the bell techs or what not can point at your dish outside to determine if its active or not.

          Thanks Alexs
Look at it this way, the big bird int he sky is transmitting a signal. The signal is the same for everyone and the dish on your roof recieves the signal which then is decoded by the reciever. Now if some tech came along and pointed some pan at my house about all he maybe able to pick up is what bird in the sky my dish is pointed at, which at any point is not a crime. Now how can he with his pan know weither or not my reciever is decoding the stream when nothing is transmitted from the dish? That is why I said it is a bunch of BS.

I like good laughs too, but I think Forreal's urban myth may be correct.

the little pan thing is probably a highly directional receiver just looking for the Local Oscillator(LO or VCO) of the LNB (see if it's active). Same sort of thing they do in UK sniff LO of the TV to see if you are receiving signals illegally. They seem to be able to pinpoint location of the TV receiving signals illegally before entering the house.

Also remember radar detector "detectors" that police use where they are illegal, they detect the LO or VCO of most Radar Detector. That's why there is a market for "invisible" radar detectors in some area.

for the service provider, they just have to drive around and look for dishes on roofs, then look up the address in the system. If it's their equipment, and just verify active subscription service if the LNB is powered up.

I really don't know what I just said and brent will correct me
..... maybe it's another job for mythbusters... or maybe sesame street
            put.......put.......

            .... ... .. .

I just don't see the LO to be strong enough for anything to detect it. There is no way a dish can radiat more then say a couple inches at the power it is at.
