  • FS: Alessandro MS2i Headphones (Audiophile )

Not sure if I will get any interest on NVD but just in case:

I recently purchased these headphones. They are really amazing audiophile headphones and I cannot praise them enough. I have run them from three sources: my fairly dated audiophile minidisc deck, my Pioneer Elite receiver and a SB-Live through a Perreaux amp. It sounded great in all cases and they probably sounds pretty good through any source (although for headphones of this caliber you really should be serious about your source).

If you like very detailed, precise highs and like your bass to be very tight and controlled, then these are for you. I would not describe these headphones as sounding warm, but rather very revealing, almost ruthlessly so. You will probably not be able to tolerate low bitrate mp3's with these on. I recommend them for home listening most of all, or if you have your own office at work.

You will definitely be able to hear parts of the music you never dreamed was on the recording. You will be able to hear the hum of the amps used by the musicians. You will be able to hear the pick on the guitar strings.

Now the tough part, why am I selling them? These are open headphones, which means that they produce just as much sound out the backs of the cups as they project into your ears. I bought them for work but really underestimated how loud I like to listen to music and how audible they are to my coworkers. If you sit next to me with these on it is fairly distracting. So I have to let these go and buy some sealed headphones. I much prefer the sound and staging of open headphones, so this makes me very sad.

They have solid aluminum alloy cups with mesh backs and fine mesh over the drivers. The pads are bowl-shaped foam and reversible so you can try them in two different setups. The headband is leather hand-stiched. They are very retro-looking and quite solid.

Anyway, I am asking $275 CAD here in town (retail $300 US). If you want to chat about them just let me know.

They are lovely sounding headphones and true justice is done to them when you have a proper headroom amplifier to compliment them, otherwise their quality tends to magnify the puke the source can put out.

I am glad someone else on here can appreciate them!

They are actually not at all bad off a good source with no amp - as I said I listen to them off my minidisc (rack), which has a really excellent DAC and fully digital input (connected to a CD-player). Also sounds good off a Pioneer Elite which is a very decent source with digital input, I feed it from a Pioneer DVD player or from my computer via digital out. Although they have a high current draw they are (relatively) low impedance headphones.

I did also demo them on my brother's Perreaux amp using an analogue source. The amp helps a little bit but I would not say the difference is night and day (if you have a good source). If you have a crappy source (portable, cheap discman, etc) then yes an amp is necessary. I would not say they "magnify" the distortion of a bad source, but rather that they "reveal" it.

The biggest difference to my ears is not hardware at all, but just the source material-- as I said you cannot listen to compressed MP3's on the MS2i's... You can really tell a 256kbps mp3 compared to a 192kbps mp3, and something like a 160kbps or 128kbps sounds awfull to the point of you not wanting to listen to it.

Anyway I would put these headphones on par with speakers 10x their price or more in terms of the quality and detail of the sound (not sound stage of course).

I posted some photos in my gallery.

I had a set of AKG studio phones that were so accurate that I could listen to nothing but original CD's and DAT's. At the time 192 FBR mp3's were the norm and they were just awful thru those phones.

I hope these phones go to a good home sadly I cannot justify the addition to my collection.

If I am forced to take the train frequently to and from the train station to work I think I may spring for a set of Etymotics to filter out the trash.

Ah I am not a big fan of IEM phones, although I acknowledge their quality.

These are SOLD already. They will be missed.

My replacements will likely be some Audio Technical ATH-A900's, which will sound like crap compared to the MS2i but at least will be sealed.
