    Re: WTB: Wireless Router

Future shop has a sale on their SMC2804WBR wireless routers (802.11 b and g, along with 4 10/100ports). Regular $80, but tack on an "instant" $10 rebate and $60 mail in rebate, it's down to $10!!

Futureshop had some Netgear ones with a good rebate for a while. I didnt know much about them, but they got good reviews so I tried one out and it works very well. If you can still find one of these cheap, I'd say its a safe bet.

I'm a big fan of Linksys, please let me know what you want for it. B, G....I don't care.

I htink SMC is jsut as bad as my blekin one. It was the single most waste of money ever. Stupid thing can not even keep a connection for over an hour and the softeware is HORRIBLE. Save yourself the hassel and buy a d-link of linksys one (I have heard the dlink ones are the nicest).

have had 2 linksys. 1 wired and 1 wireless. work very well with one machine, but 2 or more and a little network traffic lock them both up.. need to unplug/plugin, then they are good again for a few hours. Also have 2 lynksys wireless g routers at my office that our tech just hucked because they couldn't handle traffice and kept locking up. At work we now use Cisco, which is obvoiusly a little to industrial for home use. Its odd cause Cisco makes the Linksys routers... i guess they just cheap out on their consumer brand.

by the way, i have 3 computers running off this netgear router, 2 wired, 1 wireless. the one computer ran as a game server for about 6 months and the router kept on going. I personally am happy with netgear. I guess everyone has bad experiences.

you must have gotten a dud. I had one for over a year before I upgraded from a 802.11b to a g model (I didn't get a 802.11g smc...I got a netgear because it was on sale ). The setup software wasn't the greatest, but if you know how to set it up it was great. No problems at all...

I would say I got a dub but everywhere I searched everyone had the same problem and there was no fixes that worked for any extended periods. It is stuffed in a box somewhere now, maybe I will pull it out someday soon and beat on it.

I had a really bad SMC experience as well.

Aleks, let me know what you find.
