Thanks Bill. Yeah, I'm pretty much following your lead and making the jump to a Canon DSLR (or possibly the D70s, but that debate could fill a thread in itself lol). I made some connections with some people tied to workbook.com and Corbis, and it turns out that they really like my "portfolio". So I thought I would possibly try out stock photography as a sideline to the 9-5 job Plus, a DSLR is much funner anyways for playing paparazi here in LA

I still love the Sony though, and it's a very capable camera for most any situation. So if anyone is interested, PM me an offer! Oct 7 is still about 2 1/2 weeks out so plenty of time

Yep, it's out, and it's expensive (for me, but WAY cheaper than anything else in this league on the market). 12.8MP Full Frame CMOS... kinda slow, but it's target market is landscape, fashion, architecture, etc. photographers. Most photojournalists/sports shooters would probably still go with a 1DMkII or 20D.

Yeah, I'm still on the fence as to whether I should get the D70s with the kit lense, or the Canon 350D (body only) and sink more money into a better lense. Not sure if I would fully utilize the benefits of the D70 vs. the Canon in this case.... I think it'll come down to price Any thoughts? Bill?

My opinion you ask?

To be honest, I believe Canon is light years ahead of Nikon in terms of DSLR technology, and I think the gap is widening. Canon has consistently brought out the technology leaders (Digital Rebel, 5D) first. Also, from what I can tell by reading the various forums on the net, more pro's are using Canon DSLR's than are Nikon, which is at least an indicator of how good "professionals" think Canon stuff is.

Next, the Canon lenses available are absolutely incredible. Don't get me wrong, Nikon has amazing glass as well, but I am so happy with some of my L series glass. Yes, it's very expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for.

I would suggest you strongly consider a 20D. I had the Digital Rebel before my 20D, and even though the 350D solves most of my gripes with the DRebel, it still isn't quite up to snuff IMO. The scroll wheel on the back of the 20D is a huge win. It's incredibly useful. If you can, consider the new Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS lens. It's brand spanking new, and all reports are that it's amazing, and on par with the 24-70 f/2.8 L (which I have).

I've been reading tons on fredmiranda.com. They have a crazy amount of info, and the buy/sell forums are incredible. So much stuff goes through there everyday, I'm sure you could pick up a slightly used 20D for very cheap. I bought a Canon 1.4x extender from there and it was a great deal. Also, check out Dell. On their US site, they sell DSLR's and lenses (the good ones too). Sometimes they have incredible deals.

Exactly what Billip said...except all in favour of Nikon...

They're both great...opinions run deep and to be honest it's a matter of personal preference. Personally I prefer not to be in Canon's marketing vortex...the vortex @ Nikon is smaller and is my preference...

Whichever way you go you'll enjoy it. And if you go the D70 route...I can't really recommend the kit lense....(subtext)...you'll buy several anway...

I got the 350 XT with a tamron 28-70 2.8 and it's just dandy. Kit lens is fine for wide sunlit landscapes and I like the weight and size. If you like big and sturdy the D70 or the 20D but I like portable. The sigma 18-125 would be a good alternative to the kit lens.
