  • LF: Intel PIII 1GHz processor

I've got a Dell Dimension 4100 computer, with 866MHz processor.

I know when I got the computer (years ago) that the chipset can support a 1GHz PIII processor.

Anybody have one they'd like to unload? Or know of a cheap place I can find one?

well memory express here in calgary still sells the socket 370 ones.. but depending on your motherboard you'll need some parts..

open up your case and tell me if the processor flat on the board or looks like a nintendo cartridge stuck on.. if its the nintendo style thats an old Slot 1 and you'll need the processor and then a slocket for it to fit right.. but seriously dude you can buy a pretty decent home system for like 1500 bucks now unless.. your 866 is fine to even run windows Xp aslong as you got 512 of ram in it.. i gave my old computer last year to my parents and its a P3 1ghz with 512 and it runs XP great (no games though )

      thanks for the tip.

I believe the processor is flat on the board (i haven't checked it for a good year or two ).

yeah the 866 runs XP just fine (and I've got a sweet graphics card so games aren't a problem either). I just want a bit of extra oomph, so that I can watch satellite on my PC (dvb card) and rip a DVD without things starting to chug!

I'd rather plop down $50 on a used 1Ghz processor than a G on a new computer. (for now anyway! )

You probably won't notice much of a difference from 866Mhz to 1Ghz...
