Blu-Ray is already a dead format i wouldn't put to much money into it. Sony stopped development about 3 months after they won the High Def wars. Solid state is supposed to be the next thing with both Sony and Toshiba working on them. Your Blu-ray Disks will be sitting next to your Laser Discs within 2 years.

            Re: DVD's for Sale

everything I've read points towards Blu-Rays having a "market life" of that of DVD's (10 years). Solid state is better and they are developing it, but it may not be as fast as you think cause of the investments company's have put into blu-ray (r&d players etc) and a big one that kept coming up was if disc format goes away, then company's like blockbuster would probably go under as they haven't figured out how to "rent" a solid state format yet............. and the gov't won't let that happen.

              Re: DVD's for Sale

Blu-ray sales are only at 5% of the market DVD's being the rest. They made the componentry too expensive killing its launch it should be atleast 10 - 15% of the market already but its not increasing that much even with only 1 format now. You need a HD-TV a Blu-ray Player, HDMI cables all of these thing are of course getting cheaper but probably to late with DVD's being so cheap people are not switching over any time soon giving the next format time to develop i am guessing 2-3 years.

They way to go if you are going Blu-Ray is get a home theater PC with Blu-ray drive that way you can upgrade when the change comes and hopefully if the gov't stops the cable companies from shoving these **** digital TV/PVR boxes down our throats you can have your digital cable / PVR all built into the same PC as well as operating as a normal home PC would.

What is hard about renting a solid state device if they make it a memory card size it would be the same as with DVD just smaller they can put encryption on them and such.

Blue ray player $179.99 Samsung b1500 at Costco last I checked.
HDMI Cable $6.99 Superstore a few months ago
Cost of Blue Ray movies over DVD's about $5
Picture quality difference on the 56 Inch TV Priceless...
Actually even with the HD Cable I always prefer to watch the HD Channels over the non HD ones.
The biggest reason why Blue Ray will be sticking around for awhile is that it is backward compatible with DVD's. With Blue Ray disc's not costing any more to produce we will eventually see DVD's rise in price to be a greater cost then a blue ray. I am not saying this will happen in 6 months, but over time we will see this. What exactly is the next format, I don't know at the moment. There are many things that will have an influence on what happens next. Codecs, internet bandwidth, the media or devices in which to store the digital copies to keep them "safe" for the creators.
I have a hard time watching a DVD now after seeing a blue ray version of the same movie. The size of the TV does make a difference though, so if you don't have one 37` or bigger you might not notice the difference as much as the the bigger ones.

                  Don't forget the $1200+ 1080P TV set i think that's the kicker.

I am not saying that blu-ray isn't any good i have one in my hometheater PC but i am not going to be buying a bunch of blu-ray discs as it has the hallmarks of being the next laser disc. Which was better than DVD for picture quality due to the lack of digital compression but still did not survive.

                    Re: DVD's for Sale

I dunno. A lot can happen in 2 years. If you watch a lot of movies, you'll have enjoyed your system and movies enough to justify the cost after 2 years. There isn't much for technology that will not have got any better ove a 2 year period. At some point, you just have to jump in. Even if solid state systems became available in 2 years, you'd be waiting at least another year or more to get a good intuitive system with all the kinks worked out at a reasonable price. Thats a long time to wait to watch some nice high def movies at home. You can leave the Blu-Ray plugged in if things go solid-state. I still have my VCR hooked up for kids movies on VHS.

Bump for this guys DVD's, since this thread is totally hijacked

**BTW, was at MRO Electric yesterday. They had component cables (3') for 5$, and 6' HDMIs for 12-15$, if anyone is looking.

blue ray aint gonna disappear, if sony stopped development of it when they won why did v2.0 come along and another version is in the works.

Solid state is too expensive even compared to BRay. it requries cmponents etc and increased manufacture costs it will be a good few years before any of that comes around and im talking over 5 (imho)

8G memory keys are less than a blank blueray disk and don't require the expensive manufacturing costs. They also don't get scratched. Once they come up with a decent copywriting process we'll see it. 5 years is a loooong time in the tech world.
