  • Macvision Navigation System

I picked up a Macvision Navigation System from Crappy Tire today....$399 for the unit that includes the Ram mount, 12v and 120v power adapters, 7" touch screen and a 30 GB hard drive. The HD stores maps for all of north America as well as your "address book" of place you like to go to. I was surprized to find out that the unit also has the ability to play MP3s loaded onto the HD. In shopping around most units with these features are $1000+. Check it out as it is a cool add on for any car.

    Re: Macvision Navigation System

I had a chance to play with this unit yesterday.......It is very lame and I have returned it. Some of the problems are -
1)Up to 15 min to get a sat signal
2)When you change the scale of view you have to redo your route to get your current location to show up.
3)Map is lacking a lot of the new areas of Calgary...no updates on their site
4)When looking up an address it does not default to the city that you are currently in so if you are looking up something like 6th Ave you get several hundred 6th Ave from across Canada to sort through.
5)No US maps other than "Long Haul Truck routes"
6)The Points of Interest feature that has hospitals, gas stations ATMs etc plain just doesn't work.
7)Unit locked or froze a few times which required a reboot (and 15 min to lock onto sat signal)

All in all the unit has a lot of cool features but many just don't work or work so poorly that they are basicly not usuable. When I recturned the unit the clerk said "Oh yeah we have gotten just about all of them back" and I did see 2 others sitting in the return pile.

And this is why is was only $400. Lesson learned on Crappy Tire electronics? Just kidding....at least you tried. You definately have to spend some bills to get a decent nav system.....trust me
