    Re: Ripping driving me nuts

Ram is pretty cheap, it might be worth picking up a new one and installing it while removing the old one. If that works you are golden, if no the problem is something else and you now have more ram for your machine which is not such a bad thing.

      Still Confused

      Well, here she is...

I was wrong, I did have two ram chips, I ran memtest86 a few more times testing every configuration and combination of Ram in each slot, problem is, the machine fails every time in the same spot...part way through test 6 of the memtest tests.

I've also tested with the Windows ram testing tool found @ http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp, it finds nothing wrong with the Ram.

Foolishly I also attemtped to update a Keyboard driver that Compaq has recently released...it updates the bios, funny thing is it crashed too. I thought I was dead meat if something crashed while updating the bios, the answer is no(in this case), everything was fine. So I proceeded to test it with various combinations of Ram, it too fails at the same point every time.

FYI, I'm also do cold restarts between the tests.

I'm not convinced the ram is faulty since the Microsoft test passes it, and the memtest is crashing out at a conistent point, just like the keyboard bios updater! My presumption is that when x amount of data is loaded or processed through the board a problem is experienced that results in a crash. The only hypothesis I can come up with is that the cache on the board is faulty.

Anybody have any ideas? I haven't tried running the machine while on a bag of ice to see if this is thermally related, but that's about all I've left!

Damn RAM! Good to hear you're back in business. For ripping you might want to check out Exact Audio Copy. I'm kind of picky with ripping CD's and this has been the best for me. Not a click/pop since I've used it. I followed the Uberstandard , it tells you how to setup the ripper and encoder for prime quality mp3's.

Check it out. If you have any questions, let me know.

WMP will do CD's but I find it's not always a guaranteed rip. I did my whole collection a while back and didn't want to be bothered with having to play each song to make sure there we no imperfections. Plus, can't you only do .wmv files?

                    Re: Ripping driving me nuts

Ok, well that's an improvement, but I still find it unpredictable for ripping. Any software that uses burst most is a gamble. EAC takes a little bit longer, but the tracks are smooth like butta.
