Just an FYI those don't look like GLI headlights.
Unless of course you smoked them yourself in which case they would be "Ruined GLI headlights"
You're right in that they are definitely not headlights!
These are stock from a 03 GLI -- dark candy canes. I'm not sure how the lights were distributed by models -- but seems to be that light candy canes came on later GLI's or with 1.8t GLI's.
03 Gli never had candy cane, 03 vr6 Gli is all red, 04 turbo Gli are smoked candy canes. I'm pretty sure yours are VHT taillights. The 04 vr6 Gli had white candy canes( they aren't really gli)

Lol i'm pretty good at this. I meant taillights for the record
As far as OEM, they definitely didn't come on any vehicle from the factory. Factory was a light smoke in 2004.5/5 GLI's, and clear candy cane tails came on standard models 05+. These are definitely a dark smoke and are aftermarket/not considered GLI taillights. That's all i have to offer, good luck with sale. These are quite popular amongst the younger crowd with black vehicles if you want to know the target audience.
I wasn't able to get a good macro close up picture - - but these are indeed Hella brand lights (or at least have the Hella logo embossed on the exterior corner). Laser etched PN at the the top returns standard (1J5 945 096S 3E0 and 1J5 945 095S 3E0) -- but also with some marks for date and something else: 3202 (batch or submodel?).
FWIW, the car I pulled these off of had a special edition badge on the fenders for "Volkswagen Canada 1952 -2002". Build date was 08/2002 - registered as an 03 GLI.
