    Re: FS: Brake help

I'm running this brake setup on my MK4. They do fit perfectly on mine.

I set about changing my rear brakes the other week. I got a friend who is very experienced in doing this to help me and show me through this.
My current rear brakes are disks and not cross drilled. The new brakes are cross drilled.
Unfortunately we hit a few problems. We found the new drilled rotors did not fully match up with the holes on the old ones.

New rotors, its not a great pic, but I hope it gives some idea.

My friend was not happy about this but we made it work. We took the old brake pads off and when we tried to put on the new ones, we found they would not go on. By this I mean we have to force them on, they would not slid back and fourth if a brake pedal was pressed(I have made a video of this, but im currently trying to work out how to post this on here). We thought perhaps we were doing something wrong, so we double checked vortex. My friend was not happy, as he has changed many brakes before and said this does not feel right. From a safety standpoint we stopped and put the old rotors and pads back on.

I contacted the person I bought them off (Joel, Red MK2 GTI) and explained that they do not fit. Unfortunately he won't give my money back as he says they were sold for cash and if I wanted a warranty I would have paid double. In shorty Im not getting my money back. How charming.... I guess the risk comes part and parcel of buying on a forum, So I can't complain I guess.
I am a bit disappointed as I was trying to save money as I don't earn much. At the the same time build my tool set up and learn about this with the intention of helping others in the future. But I guess you live and learn...

So im stuck with these brakes. I spoke to a very nice chap at the August meet, Chris I think (Green Audi TT) and he mentioned filing the sides of the pads down. I mentioned the rotors don't fit properly. He mentioned (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) they could be for a 20th edition GTI.

I don't really know. But I have a couple of questions if anyone has any info it would much appreciated.
Has anyone used these brakes before and has any similar problems? Or do I have a lemon set? I paid $140 for these (Pic below).

Im going to buy a new set of rear brakes. I don't need anything fancy, just plain OEM rear brakes. I have a friend at a Suberau dealership who has offered to help me order brakes for my car to save some money. Can someone recommend a brand or make of brakes what would be a direct replacement of my rears. (Car is VW MK4 2004 GTI)

    Any advice appreciated.

All mk4's have the same hole pattern. Wrong is wrong and they don't look like they fit a mk4. Good thing you didn't leave them on, no sense putting your life in the hands of something shifty like that.

Sure you can complain. I've bought and sold lots of stuff on here, and never had an issue. It sucks when this stuff happens. The only questionable thing here was the guy only had 9 posts, so I guess not a lot of history. For the most part, guys that sell on here are pretty honest. Sometimes guys do show up to sell garbage, and those are the guys that have a couple posts here, and you will never hear from them again. This guy was either selling poorly made stuff, or stuff for the wrong car. If it was the wrong car, I'd think he refund you, so he probably knew it was crap.

I think this is the guy I mailed to ask what brand the rotors were and he said they were built in a machine shop out east (no brand). Obviously got they measurements wrong. It sounded a little fishy though. Probably better that they didn't fit, for you're safety's sake.

$160 got you Zimmerman xcross rotors with PBR Ceramincs to your door from just about any online Canadian worldpac related site. Semi Metalic pads and rotors that won't last nearly as long as the Zimmerman, trust me you are better off without them. This is a life or death part on the car, not worth the small savings.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think a guy who knowingly sold a set of rotors that were sketchy has but one opportunity to make things right, and do so, or else that person should no longer be a member of this board.

Mistake or not, a refund should be in order, at least for the rotors.

Can you name a couple of sites in Canada...? I cant find Zimmerman and PBR Ceramics for $160 online.

Tube Dub have OEM VW Rear Rotors and pads for around $200
I phoned VW and was quoted $395.66 + tax (WTF?!)
ECS Tuning have Brembo Rotors, and PBR Ceramic for $122.88, with 'Can ease' delivery it comes to around $200 anyways.

Try www.autopartsway.ca. Have purchased parts from them on several occasions.

Further to my above post: Autopartsway.ca has the following prices:

PBR Ceramics are $35.67 + $57 per rotor for Zimmerman (Vented). Ships for free as over $75. Just add GST. When I order, it takes 2 days to get to Edmonton as the warehouse is in Richmond, BC. You will be under $150. Balo rotors are even cheaper at $35 (non-vented).

                          Best of luck.

Mega noooob question. I take it my rears are unvented....? (See pics above). Would vented rotors fit? I'm assuming not?
