  • Flasher Relay Issue

my flasher relay is posessed... it has started clicking randomly. Ususally this happens after i signal, and continues as long as it feels like it. Sometimes it just clicks a few times for no reason at all. Its a fast click, like if you have one light burnt out. I've wiggled the indicator/multifunction switch, and the hazard switch while it is having one of its clicking fits, and this has no effect. Also, no lights on the car flash as it clicks, including cluster indicators.. it just clicks away (which made me feel better since this started happening on deerfoot, and at first i was sure i was thouroughly confusing everyone)...

when i actually signal, or put on the hazards, all light work as they should.

My first instinct is to replace the flasher relay, but if anyone else has thoughts, let me know.

is this switch all together with brights and cruise, like the hole arm has to be replaced?

      Re: Flasher Relay Issue

I had this happen to me this past summer, just wait until it starts clicking non-stop all the time...

I first replaced the hazard switch, it was cheap so might as well start there. Unfortunately it turned out to be the signal stalk and I had that replaced.

I still have the hazard switch I bought, since the original was ok I didn't bother swapping it out, you can have it to test out if you want (it takes 30 seconds to swap out). I'm working out of town this week but I'll drop it at my office in the SE this morning just in case, pm you with the details.

Most Likely The Turn Signal Arm, Rarely The Hazard Switch Only

I had this same problem. Im not big on doing this but it worked this time.
I had it booked in to get replaced/checked. In the two week period from booking it stopped. This was about 4 months ago and it hasnt happened since.
Maybe if your lucky the problem will correct itself

Thanks, seems like there are enough cases here that i might as well just get the whole signal stalk right away.

Big deal to swap this out? i can't imagine there is anything to difficult, other than being in an awkward spot.

**found a few great DIY's, think its all within my capability... but if you've done it, feel free to chime in with advise.

Brent... your garage isn't heated is it?

disconnect battery. remove airbag. remove steering wheel, remove column covers. unplug switches. split the 2 switches apart. install new, repeat in reverse order.

                      OK, stop!!!!

The problem is that little metal bits contaminate the grease in the turn signal switch.

Get a can of contact cleaner. Stick the nozzle in behind the turn signal stalk. Spray, wiggle, spray........ That usually fixes the problem.

If that is not succesful, you can remove, clean, regrease and reinstall the switch. You should not need to replace it.

                          Stop!

be carefull with a propane heater in a confined space, they burn oxygen to make the flame and can quickly consume the air in a given space.

Thank you for reading todays gratis safety anouncement.

if you go to the trouble of pulling the switch to clean it, why not just replace it and save doing it twice?
